Last weekend I took a trip up to Charlotte, North Carolina to visit Aunt Sue and Granmama and to celebrate Granmama's 90th birthday! It was a ton of fun. She thoroughly enjoyed having family in town and having so many friends from her retirement community come celebrate her big day.
The best story from the weekend was about the balloons we got for decoration. George (Aunt Sue's boyfriend) was given the task of buying balloons for the event. Well, George has a wonderful sense of humor and will never do things halfway, so he was very excited when we drove by a 5k walk that had a huge banner of balloons at the finish line. Mind you this was supposed to be a quick trip that he, Lauren, and I were making to the mall before running over to the balloon store. Before we knew it, George was pulling into the parking lot and asking the race personnel if we could have all the balloons when they were finished. Sure enough, they said he could come back in 30 minutes and have them if he made a donation to the MS Society (who was sponsoring the race). It was funny trying to keep it a secret from my mom and aunt about what he was up to.
It gets better though. This stream of balloons had to be at least 30 feet long. George drives a small truck w/ a camper on the back. When I asked if he needed help picking up the balloons, he said he could manage just fine. And manage he did! He ended up tying one end of the stream to the back of his truck and drove the whole way to the retirement center w/ them dragging and floating down the road behind his truck. How awesome is that?!? Amazingly only about 5 balloons had popped during the ride. The balloons made the whole room come alive :-)
The other really fun part was surprising Granmama with two framed photos of her when she was 25. She was g o r g e o u s!!! There was one photo of her in a beautiful dress and one of Grandaddy and her early in their marriage. She loved getting to show those off to her 90 year old friends!
Our family is such a blessing!! We are such a fun and quirky group of people. And Granmama is our shining example of health, poise, joy, and intelligence. She is an incredible woman, and I am so honored to be one of her granddaughters. If only Greg and I will commit now to be as healthy as she has always been and to pursue the Lord and a love of learning as she has. She encouraged us both to "try for a 90". We intend to do just that :-)
How precious!!! I love her and miss seeing her! Please tell her I said hello :)
