If there is one thing I have been a little nervous about since visiting PA, it is the food prices. Not sure if it is because Lancaster is a tourist area or just because it is a more northern area, but the restaurant prices were $2-4 more for each item than I would expect them to be in Texas. That can really add up!
In CS our plan has been to clip coupons and look at the weekly Kroger and HEB ads to determine which place has the better deals of the week. If we are using coupons, usually Kroger is the way to go b/c they double and triple the smaller coupons. But HEB always wins without coupons.
It looks like I will be "making the rounds" through town each week in Lancaster in order to get the best selection and prices for various items. We'll be visiting Central Market for our fruits and veggies, a Millersville butcher called Herr's Market for our meat, and the rest can either be Target, Costco, or the local grocery store. I looked at Giant's website (that is the cheaper of the 2 grocery stores) and they have a super cool system set up! From one page, you can create your grocery list by clicking on items from their weekly ad or "browsing the aisles" to see selections, you can select coupons and print them, and you can see what items have Bonus Buy savings that week. They even keep track of your previous lists so that they can alert you when items go on sale that you commonly buy! Greg and I really like making our meal plan each week, so this little system will add even more fun to the process and hopefully maximize our savings....so we can use that to eat out more maybe! I gotta say I looove what the internet can do!

Oh, wow, I gotta look for some kind of system for grocery stores around Nashville!
ReplyDeleteAlong the same lines, have you heard of CouponMom.com? It's a cool site. Overwhelming at first, but just click
Grocery Deals by State" in the left column and you can see what is on sale for the week and where to clip the coupons.
check out heart4home.net for some budget friendly ideas on recipes, gifts, etc...
ReplyDeleteHey Libby,
ReplyDeleteI was thinking I needed to read your blog about your upcoming move. So I am so excited for ya'll!! The grass is great, you can walk around bare foot. I miss that grass. And you will be stopped by Amish buggies ALL the time! There's a water ice craze on the East Coast, look for Rita's water ice. It's amazing! Okay and for food, there's a place somewhere just on the outskirts of Lancaster and it's run by the Amish but they sell food dirt cheap. We'd make trips up there to get our food with church friends, all the way from Newark, DE, 60 miles. It's called Bylers I think. I'll check with friends to get the exact spelling and location. It's a dent and ding place or food that's just about at it's due date. So it's really really cheap, you just get canned goods that are dented, or dinged and salad dressings might be a week or two from expiration etc....we loved it.
I'm jealous of your move!
